Your Labs Came Back Normal. You Still Don't Feel Well
Your labs came back normal. You still don't feel well.
I listened while Sarah told me her story. (Sarah is a composite of several women I’ve worked with, not one individual, but I hear her story often.) She had just come from her yearly checkup, frustrated and discouraged. She was tired, she wasn’t sleeping, and she felt anxious and irritable most days. Her doctor had told her the labs were normal. Everything looked great, and her symptoms were just part of getting older.
But she didn’t feel great, and she didn’t believe age was the whole answer. She wondered if she was imagining things.
I told her she wasn’t. Her results said “normal,” but she didn’t feel “well.” There is a difference.
Why normal isn’t the same as well
Standard lab panels are built to catch disease. They aren’t built to catch a body that’s been under stress for years.
Standard reference ranges also come from the general population, which includes a lot of people who aren’t well. So “in range” tells you where most people fall. It doesn’t tell you how your body functions at its best.
That’s why I use functional reference ranges built around optimal health. They help us find the gap between normal and well.
I also go beyond standard testing because chronic stress and past trauma rarely show up on a routine panel.
What I look at instead
Hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) helps me see patterns of stress that standard labs miss.
Cortisol, tested through saliva or urine, shows how your adrenals are handling your days. High cortisol often points to a body stuck in fight-or-flight. Low cortisol can point to a freeze response, exhaustion, or low mood. Either way, imbalanced cortisol can slow your body’s healing.
Insulin, compared with functional ranges, shows me how stress and hard circumstances affect your blood sugar. That can impact your mood, your weight, and your hormones.
Methylation testing is a blood test that helps me connect what’s happening at the cellular level with your mood and hormones.
None of this is guesswork. It’s measurable, and it’s something we can work with.
If you’ve been anxious, tired, and irritable while holding a normal lab report, this isn’t a lack of effort. You don’t need to white-knuckle through your days. Your body is responding to prolonged stress. The right testing can show you what it’s been trying to say, and that brings hope.
A few months after her testing, Sarah told me that her energy had improved. She felt more present with her kids, and her anxiety had dropped. Her doctor’s labs hadn’t changed. What changed was that we finally looked at the right things.
